What are the advantages of Invisalign?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth without many of the hassles of traditional metal braces. Instead of metal brackets cemented to your teeth, you wear a series of clear, removable plastic trays called aligners. Like braces, the aligners slowly correct your alignment issues and move your teeth into the proper place.
The most obvious advantage of Invisalign over metal braces is that it’s discreet, while metal braces are highly visible. You don’t have to feel self-conscious when you talk or smile during Invisalign treatment.
Invisalign is also more convenient than traditional metal braces. To get the best results, you need to wear the aligners at least 22 hours a day, but you remove them to eat, drink, brush your teeth, and floss. You can enjoy all the same foods you normally do and care for your teeth as you normally would.
In addition to their appearance and convenience, Invisalign is far more comfortable than traditional braces. You might feel some pressure when you start a new set of aligners, but the discomfort is far less than the experience of having your braces tightened. Also, you don’t have to worry about metal wires or brackets irritating your mouth.
What problems can Invisalign correct?
Invisalign can correct most of the same problems that traditional braces do, including:
- Crowding
- Crossbite
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Gaps
Even if you have severe alignment issues, ask your dentist about Invisalign. The technology has improved since it was introduced, and Invisalign can now treat many complex cases that previously required traditional metal braces.
Orthodontics can improve the appearance of your smile, but Invisalign is more than just a cosmetic treatment. Misaligned teeth are more vulnerable to tooth decay, chronic pain, and other issues. Straight teeth are easier to brush and floss, which can prevent many dental health problems.
How long does Invisalign take?
Invisalign treatment usually lasts 12 months. You wear each aligner for two weeks before moving on to the next step. If you have a simple case, it could be as short as 6 months, while complex cases could require up to 18 months of treatment. To stay on track, it’s important to comply with your orthodontist’s instructions and wear your aligners at least 22 hours a day.
Once you complete your Invisalign treatment, you receive a retainer to keep your teeth from shifting back into place. Dr. Morton usually recommends wearing the retainer daily for six months, and then at night for another six months.
